These days, it’s become trendy for people to be ‘very mindful’ about their actions, and it’s wise for you to adopt this behaviour when using the ATM.

The ATM is a quick and convenient way to access your bank accounts and perform various financial transactions. ATMs are usually positioned in open spaces with some allowing customers to drive up and use them.

However, using an ATM today is riskier than you may realise, and you should always exercise caution when using one. ‘Be mindful’ of the following risks:

  1. Card skimming/cloning: Criminals are always finding ways to tamper with the machines to try and steal your card’s information. Ensure you check for potential skimming indicators every time you visit the ATM. Indicators can include: pinhole cameras, scratches, damaged pieces, a loose card slot, elevated keypad or keypad resistance. Find another ATM if something looks suspicious at the one you intend to use.
  2. PIN stealing: Always cover your PIN and keep an eye on your card at all times. This is especially useful if the ATM is in a location where there is not sufficient privacy and there may be a line of people waiting behind you. If someone is standing too close to you at the ATM, ask that person to move away. Also keep your PIN a secret and never share it with anyone, not even family members or close friends.
  3. Discarding your receipts: If you choose to get a receipt after you conduct a transaction at an ATM, do not throw this information into a nearby trash can or leave it behind. These receipts contain sensitive and confidential information that criminals may use to try and compromise your account. In the hands of the wrong person, this document can lead to identity theft, so always take receipts with you.
  4. Helpful hands. Never accept help from strangers at an ATM. Wait until you can ask a bank staff member to help you. People posing as ‘Good Samaritans’ may be looking to help themselves to your account and money.

Here are some additional ATM safety tips

  1. Stay alert. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at nights.
  2. Choose the right location. Use ATMs that are well lit and in public areas. Never go to ATMs alone that are in secluded spaces.
  3. Have your card ready to go as you get to the ATM. If you need to search through your purse or wallet, you’ll give criminals more of a chance to catch you off guard.
  4. If you’re using a drive-up ATM, be sure your passenger windows are rolled up and all doors are locked. If you leave your car and walk to the ATM, lock your car. Put away/silence all distractions while at the ATM to ensure you remain alert.

Safe Banking Tip

Never give out personal information, passwords or your PIN over the internet. Your bank will never call or email you for sensitive information. If you are in doubt about any communication, contact your bank immediately through official channels and make your checks.
