Do you get alerts from your bank whenever a transaction is made with your card? Do you ever check on your bank statements to see if there’s any unusual activity with your account? If you’ve answered no to both questions, you need to contact or visit your bank immediately.

With fraud attacks, such as card skimming, on the rise, it is in your best interest to always be aware of what’s happening with your account, so that you don’t fall victim to cybercrimes and so that you can limit the impact, should access to your account become compromised.

To reduce the chance of your card being cloned or skimmed, you should always be cautious when using automated banking machines (ABMs) and when using your card(s) to make purchases.

When using any ABM or making purchases with your card(s), always:

  1. Be Vigilant and protect your PIN. Use one hand to enter the numbers and the other to cover it.
  2. When at the ABM, check the machine for signs of tampering, such as glue stains and for pinhole cameras that criminals use to steal your sensitive information. You should do the same for point-of-sale machines.
  3. Observe merchants or attendants who take your card carefully. Never let your card out of your sight and watch what they are doing. If your card has a chip and tap feature, you do not need to give them your card at all; you can complete the transaction yourself.
  4. Monitor text messages and email alerts from your financial institution carefully.
  5. Contact your bank immediately if you receive an email or text about a transaction on your account that you did not make.
